People always ask me how I learned how to draw, all the time. “How do you do that?” they say. The answer is easy – practice! And the best way to practice is to grab something random in your house, set it up, and draw a still life. As you draw, pay close attention to the textures, the lights and darks caused by light, the shape of the object, etc. All of these things come into play when you are drawing. Did you bring your sketchbook? Draw!
The best way to get better at drawing is to do it. What do you need to draw? A nice sketchbook helps. The only problem, which one should you get? I have several sketchbooks that I use which are different sizes. I’m going to be starting a sketching series and in order to sketch it helps to have a sketchbook!
In case you didn’t know it, I’m working on a project with my best friend. He is writing a graphic novel and wants me to illustrate it. I don’t mind and I’ve always wanted to try my hand at sequential art. However, there are some challenges. For example, drawing the same character in different poses, coloring, adding dramatic lighting, etc. I could go on and on about this subject because there are literally hundreds of things to know. Comic book illustration isn’t easy. Anyway, many people want to learn to draw but get stumped. They just don’t know what to do. You are more than welcome to follow me. I’m going to create my own program to improve on my skills and I’ll share my learning.
Woo hoo! I tried to upload a video to YouTube and, believe it or not, it worked. So now I have the option of posting on my website OR my YouTube channel OR both! I think I’ll do both. I mean, I am a teacher and I do have the summer off so why not indulge?
I’m working on a foreshortening series starting with hands and then moving into the face. I need work on both. I’m also working on value. It should be fun. I’ll post my new videos very soon!
