New Art on the Horizon

Looking forward to May! Why? Well, I am a teacher and the end of May signals summer vacation so that is exciting. More importantly though, May brings Vanquish Studio’s signature event: Phoenix Fan Fusion!

This year should be even bigger and better and we have three new prints to debut. We have decided to retire Harley Quinn. We have had that same Harley Quinn since the start  of our showings in 2013. We need to update our selection. The Suicide Squad Harley is on the way. Another fan favorite that is going to be retired is Batman. I’ve loved that one but it is time that a new Dark Knight protect chibi-Gotham. Armored Batman will be the replacement which should be a lot of fun to draw. And finally, you already know that we sold out of our last Groot so we decided to make Baby Groot! He is just too cute not to do and I’ve already done the inks.

There you have it, three new prints for Phoenix Fan Fusion. Join Vanquish Studio’s journey towards the Fusion Zone has begun!

Flatting is a Lengthy Process…BUT WORTH IT!

So I decided to introduce 4 new works this year at Phoenix Comicon. They will be in a new format – 11 x 17. This is the first year that we are introducing this new size. I personally think that people will like it cause art needs to be a bit bigger that 8 x 10 to hang on walls. I’ve been selling the standard 8.5 x 11 since 2012!!! I still have a ton and my Nightcrawler is still available!

But let’s face it, we need to expand…get new merchandise…explore new options. Anyway, I just finished flatting 3 out of my 4 which is exciting. I’m learning how to use screen capture software so expect new videos with, including flatting.

Would Have Had Gambit…

So I didn’t get to show my new art at Dev Con this past weekend. YES, I called it Dev Con. I think that law suit about using the abbreviated “con” and copyrighting it is ridiculous.  Anyway, I had finished Gambit but didn’t get to show him off. Now, I really like him as a character when I started reading X-Men (back in the 90’s!) He could charge objects with an energy blast. He always kept a deck of cards in his pocket because they were small, convenient, and plentiful for someone with that particular power – he has 52 charges! I also liked his French/ Cajun accent when he spoke to Rogue. I was soooo upset when the Bryan Singer movies hooked-up Rogue with Iceman! Everyone knows the eternal love struggle in the comics is between Rogue and Gambit. It’s classic forelorn love. Anyway, he was my favorite X-Man and from the requests at comic conventions, a lot of other people like him as well. So I had to draw him. I did have a slight issue with the black eyes. When my manager saw them she freaked out but I explained that Gambit has mutated eyes. That’s one subtle thing about him that can be unsettling. He really can’t hide that he’s a mutant. And his eyes are red which is an emotionally charged color in our society. This was a challenge but fun to draw and I hope you like it.

Thank You!

I’m back in Phoenix after a great weekend in my hometown for the Tucson Comicon. Thank you to everyone who bought a print! I’m honored and humbled that people like my style of chibi art. I had a lot of good suggestions for next year. Thank you, thank you, thank you! It’s nice to receive such a warm welcome. I’ll be posting video soon on my YouTube channel of some awesome costumes I saw.

The Scarecrow

Last year at the Tucson Comicon I was asked to draw the DC character Scarecrow. I was unfamiliar with this character and did the best I could. This year, however, I won’t be caught off guard. I’ve done some research into this character and he is actually a pretty awesome villain. Of course, I had to draw him chibi-style for this year’s con. I hope you like him as much as I do. I even included his fear-inducing pheremones.
