New Art on the Horizon

Looking forward to May! Why? Well, I am a teacher and the end of May signals summer vacation so that is exciting. More importantly though, May brings Vanquish Studio’s signature event: Phoenix Fan Fusion!

This year should be even bigger and better and we have three new prints to debut. We have decided to retire Harley Quinn. We have had that same Harley Quinn since the start ¬†of our showings in 2013. We need to update our selection. The Suicide Squad Harley is on the way. Another fan favorite that is going to be retired is Batman. I’ve loved that one but it is time that a new Dark Knight protect chibi-Gotham. Armored Batman will be the replacement which should be a lot of fun to draw. And finally, you already know that we sold out of our last Groot so we decided to make Baby Groot! He is just too cute not to do and I’ve already done the inks.

There you have it, three new prints for Phoenix Fan Fusion. Join Vanquish Studio’s journey towards the Fusion Zone has begun!

New Coloring Page Release!

Venom is a Living Symbiote! And now a NEW Coloring Page…

I really didn’t read too much of the Spider-Man comics when I first got into comics. Actually, I was more of an Image Comics kinda gal since I was interested in coloring, inking, and pencilling – the art. However, one cannot deny that a good storyline, careful pacing of plotlines, and development of interesting, dynamic characters goes a long way. The comics I was reading didn’t have that. Sorry Image. So I started reading more cerebral comics like the Watchmen and reading other independent comics and mangas.

I must confess, however that I DID read some Spiderman comics when Venom was introduced. The thought of an alien creature attaching itself to a human was fascinating.

Of course, like all good ideas it was used TO DEATH! Marvel actually introduced offspring, yes children, of the original Venom: Scream, Phage, Riot, Lasher, and Agony. Seriously? Then they did another story with his five children called “The Planet of the Symbiotes” (around the mid 90’s). They also, as if we didn’t have enough symbiotes at this point, did a comic called Along Came a Spider which introduced the symbiote anti-hero Hybrid. I’m not against making a dollar with a good story, I just think you CAN use an idea too much. I still like the original Venom and I think he was a fantastic villain for the Spiderverse and made an equally awesome anti-hero.

On that note, I went to the movie theater last year to check out Tom Hardy’s depiction of Eddie Brock AND Venom. I understand the actor was the voice of the symbiote and had recorded those parts in the mornings before filming so he could act against them as the human. I liked the movie only the human villain, played by Riz Ahmed (he’s the genius inventor Dr. Carlton Drake who discovered the alien symbiotes and is head of the Life Foundation)I found to be rather ordinary and not too threatening. He was a sleazeball but not necessarily as dangerous as he needed to be. The other escaped symbiote Riot, who becomes bonded with Dr. Drake at the end of the movie, could have been stronger and more diabolical as well. I think you have to have a clever, devious, strong villain in order to really appreciate the hero’s/heroine’s efforts. Hmmmm, thats just me I guess. Well, I still like Venom and I thought he would make an awesome coloring page. Click the link below the thumbnail to download the latest addition to the Vanquish Studio library!

Have You Been Practicing?

I’ve been working on drawing the female head, more specifically, faces. And remember? I needed to work on the jawline, eyes, nose, and lips. Check out my pre-assessment from a few days ago. I self-critiqued myself when it comes to drawing the female head and face. Yes! I’m working on it and yes, I’ll post the results soon.

Online Store Coming Soon

I’m so excited that pretty soon I will have my online store up and running. When I show at comicons people always ask me if they can get my art online and I’ve always had to tell them no, which stinks. No mas! I’m opening an online store at the start of the new year. Lookout 2015!

Darth Maul

Its very difficult to make a bad ass character in the cute “chibi” style but I think I got Darth Maul. What do you think? I even added his double-sided light saber! When i finally get around to coloring this bad boy it will look even better.

Coloring Venom

Well, I didn’t get a booth for the Phoenix Comicon. I’ve been trying since November of 2011 but the purchase process was a convoluted path of clicks. For someone who is semi-computer literate, it was a frustrating process. Then I received an e-mail telling me all the artist alley booths were sold out! (When I finally got to the window I needed to get to online, it was too late.) Yes, I was upset and yes, I sent a nasty e-mail which I now regret. Today’s lesson: NEVER send an e-mail when you are angry, upset, frustrated, or annoyed. I sent another e-mail apologizing but I know I look like a jackass to the Phoenix Comicon promoters. To take my mind off my stupidity, I practiced my coloring techniques on Venom.

Deadpool!

I’ve taught art for 11 years and what amazes me is how many times students just go with their first idea. The first idea is not necessarily the best idea. Here are my Deadpool sketches I’m working on for the upcoming comicon. My first draft, the head was too round AND I forgot to add the other katana. My second draft, I like the proportions of the head and I remembered the katana but the handles are different. I keep sketching until I come up with the right combination of proportions, details, pose, foreshortening, etc. ONLY after I’m happy with the image do I ink and color it. I left the correction marks on my second draft so you can see how my artistic process works. Hope this helps!
